Presenter Bio
Stephen is a
longtime gay activist who came out into Leather and SM in the late
1980’s through a primarily gay men’s Leather/Levi social
group, CLUB (Cowboy, Leather, Uniform Buddies) Calgary.
Through his
association with CLUB Calgary, Stephen became friends with some
of the leading lights of Calgary’s Leather scene and was eventually
invited to join 3SM, a small “Leather Family” of -- at
the time -- seven people (one of whom lived in Boston, MA). 3SM
eventually “topped out” (no pun intended) at ten individuals.
3SM started
as an SM-based gay men’s triad consisting of Don Bastian, Barry
“Mama” G, and their boy ron. Individuals with whom the
core group felt comfortable and who were essentially chosen family
anyway, were invited to join. At it’s peak 3SM consisted of
two male Leather Tops, a transwoman Leather Top, two switches, two
boys, a bottom, a biological female who identified as a boi who
was in service to the two gay men who identified as switches, and
a submissive/boy attached to the transwoman Leather Top.
As 3SM expanded,
the family members started to reach out into the heterosexual BDSM
community to seek connections and community as it was difficult
to find SM-connections within the gay Leather community in Calgary,
many of whom were Leather but not necessarily SM.
Through that
association, 3SM was the moving force behind the creation of a Calgary
Chapter of the National Leather Association: International (later
to become the Western Leather Federation or WLF), produced the Ides
of March Workshop Weekends and created both the Ms. Calgary Leather
Contest and Mr. Calgary Leather Contest. Ms. Calgary Leather I went
on to be first runner-up at the International Ms. Leather (IMsL)
contest and Ms. Calgary Leather III went on to be IMsL 2002.
Stephen has
presented on a variety of topics at Leather/fetish/BDSM events throughout
Alberta and BC and Ontario and been invited to emcee Mr. Edmonton
Leather II. He has written for LEASH magazine, Perceptions Magazine
(published out of Saskatoon), Xtra, Xtra West and Capital Xtra,
written on gay issues for Calgary’s arts and entertainment
weekly FFWD Magazine, and writes a regular political opinion column
for Gay Calgary.com Magazine. He is currently the Regional Co-Director
(Male) for Egale Canada – the national gay, lesbian, bisexual
and trans advocacy and lobbying organization – in the Prairies/NWT/Nunavut
Region and was the Calgary representative for the Canadians for
Equal Marriage Coalition. Since 1992, Stephen has produced and hosted
a semi-monthly glbtq and sometimes kinky radio show, Speak Sebastian,
on CJSW FM 90.9.
Stephen is an
unattached senior bottom living in a non-Leather primary relationship
with his partner of 25 years and their ‘fur son”, Joey
a 4-year old Bishon-King Charles Cavalier spaniel cross. Joey is
definitely an Alpha boy…
